
About Dr. Rohowetz
Dr. Landon J. Rohowetz, MD is the founder and medical director of Lakewood Ranch Retina. As a fellowship-trained vitreoretinal surgeon, Dr. Rohowetz has devoted his career to understanding and treating conditions that affect the back of the eye – the retina and vitreous – with a focus on delivering exemplary patient care and outcomes.
A native of Missouri, Dr. Rohowetz received his medical degree at the University of Missouri – Kansas City where he graduated Summa Cum Laude and was inducted into the most prestigious honor society for medical students, Alpha Omega Alpha. He completed his ophthalmology residency at the renowned Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, Florida, which has been ranked the #1 eye hospital in the nation for over 20 consecutive years. During this time he received a Heed fellowship, the highest award in ophthalmology residency, awarded to only 16 residents nationwide. For his clinical, surgical, and academic excellence, he was also chosen to serve as a chief resident. He subsequently underwent an intensive vitreoretinal surgery fellowship at Bascom Palmer, where he trained under world leaders in retinal disease and surgery. This was followed by his chief residency where he independently managed of wide range of retinal conditions and referrals, from macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy to complex retinal detachments and ocular trauma, all the while supervising residents and vitreoretinal surgery fellows. During this time, Dr. Rohowetz received the most prestigious recognition for a vitreoretinal surgery trainee, the Ronald G. Michels Fellowship Foundation award, offered to only 5 vitreoretinal surgery fellows nationwide, for his contributions and potential in the field of retina.

In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Rohowetz is extensively involved in retinal research and education. He has published over 50 peer-reviewed papers, the majority of which he is first author on. He has co-authored book chapters in the Ryan’s Retina, Peyman’s Principles and Practice of Ophthalmology, and the Academy’s Basic Techniques of Ophthalmic Surgery. He has presented his research at AAO, ARVO, Retina Society, and ASRS and serves as a manuscript reviewer for multiple ophthalmology journals. In addition to the Heed and Michels Fellowships, he has received numerous awards including Phi Beta Kappa, the Merck Manual Award for Outstanding Achievement in Medical Education, the ARVO Retina Research foundation Travel Grant, and the National Eye Institute Travel Grant.
